Move to Florida Increases Health Insurance Premiums, What Can I Do?
Suggestions for solving a health insurance problem

By , About.com Guide

Q: My aunt wants to move to Florida from New Jersey. Her health insurance company said that her premiums will go up about 500% because of a pre-existing condition. They put a deposit on a new house in Florida and now must back out, and she is devastated. I am sure with seniors moving to Florida everyday there must be an option. Any help is appreciated.

A: Your aunt is lucky to have your help. I'm sure this is not the first case like this, or the last. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Check with the Insurance Commissioner's office in Florida and New Jersey. They deal with insurance companies who do business in those states and may be able to offer some assistance.
  2. Insurance companies often have a process for appealing a decision, so have your aunt check to see if this is an option.
  3. Your aunt could consult with an attorney who specializes in insurance issues. Her local or state chapter of the American Bar Association can provide referrals. The first consultation with an attorney is often free.

  5. The old saying, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" is often true, so don't hesitate to complain and ask questions.
