Why is it important check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program?

It's important to practice safe senior exercise. In general, men over 40 and women over 50 should check with their doctor before doing vigorous activity, especially:
  • If you are at high risk for any chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes
  • If you smoke or are obese

According to the NIH, most older adults, regardless of age or condition, will do just fine if they practice safe senior exercise by increasing physical activity to a moderate level.
