By Sharon O'Brien, About.com

In 1978, the U.S. Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day, an annual celebration to honor grandparents and other seniors and to recognize their contributions to society and the link they provide younger generations to America’s national heritage and traditions.

Who Thought of Grandparents Day?
President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation, which made it official, but Grandparents Day was really the idea of Marian McQuade, a West Virginia homemaker and mother of 15, who was a lifelong advocate for seniors and became a national leader on senior issues.

What are the “Signs” of Success for Grandparents Day?
In 1998, on the 25th anniversary of the first West Virginia observance of Grandparents Day, Marian McQuade was honored by new West Virginia state highways signs, erected outside her hometown, that announce Oak Hill, West Virginia as the “Home of Marian McQuade, Founder of National Grandparents Day.”
