Are You a Victim of Housing Discrimination?

Learn about housing discrimination, and what you can do

By Sharon O'Brien, About.com

More than two million instances of housing discrimination occur annually, but in the year 2001, fewer than one percent of the victims filed complaints, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

If you think you may be a victim of housing discrimination, because of your age or a disability, there are resources you can use to get help.

Watchdogs Against Housing Discrimination
The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) is a membership organization that claims to represent “virtually all” of the private, non-profit fair housing education and enforcement agencies in the United States. NFHA promotes equal housing, lending and insurance opportunities through education, enforcement, training and advocacy. According to the organization’s Web site, NFHA members assisted victims or brought lawsuits in more than 16,500 housing discrimination complaints in 2001. NFHA calls itself “one of the nation's most effective fair housing watchdogs.”
