New Medicare Benefit: Prescription Drug Coverage
New Medicare Benefit Starts January 1, 2006

By Sharon O'Brien, About.com

On January 1, 2006, Medicare will start offering a new benefit—prescription drug coverage—to any Medicare beneficiaries who want to take advantage of the program.

If you are currently a Medicare beneficiary, you should have received an application by email. You can mail the Medicare benefit application back, apply at your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office or Medicaid office, apply by phone at (800) 772-1213, or apply online now.

If you receive Medicaid benefits in addition to Medicare benefits, or you receive SSI, or your Medicare premiums are paid by your state, you will automatically quality for Medicare prescription drug benefits without having to apply.

In October 2005, Medicare will mail you a booklet entitled “Medicare & You 2006,” which will provide information on the Medicare prescription drug benefit. If you have questions or want to compare benefits in your area, go to the Medicare Web site or call Medicare at (800) 633-4227.

On December 31, 2005, the temporary Medicare drug discount card program will end, but you can use your card until May 15, 2006 or when you sign up for Medicare benefit prescription drug coverage, whichever comes first.
