How much will the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan cost?

A frequent complaint about the Medicare prescription drug plan is the "doughnut" or coverage gap.

Like other types of health insurers, the Medicare prescription drug plan you choose may have limits on how much they will cover for prescription drugs.

Medicare kicks in with "catastrophic" coverage if you have an unexpected illness or injury that results in extremely high drug costs, but unfortunately all expenses incurred between your plan's limit and the catastrophic expense must be paid by you.Once you have paid the out-of-pocket expenses for drug costs in a calendar year ($3,850 (in 2007), almost all of your drug costs above that amount will be covered.

To help you offset some of the coverage gap drug costs, Medicare offers 5 Ways to Lower Your Costs During the Coverage Gap.
