Achieving Sexual Intimacy Despite Chronic Pain

Despite the challenges posed by chronic pain, you and your partner don’t have to sacrifice sexual intimacy to cope effectively with your illness or injury.

You can continue to have a satisfying sexual relationship, but it does take some extra effort.

It starts with open and honest communication between you and your partner. You both need to share:

  • How you truly feel
  • What you miss now that chronic pain is part of your life
  • What you want and need from your relationship and each other

And you’ll both have to be willing to adapt to this new situation, to accept new realities that can’t be changed, and to be flexible and creative about exploring new ways to express your sexuality and to make those old connections you’ve been missing.
