Keep Your Pet Safe with Free Medical Alert Tags and Pet Registry
Nationwide service aims to improve America’s pet safety

By , About.com Guide

People who have pets know how important it is to keep each pet safe, because pet lovers often feel that their animals are members of the family. When a pet is lost the experience can be heartbreaking, especially if the pet has a disability or requires medication.

Free Service to Keep Your Pet Safe
Pet Protect PetHealthAlert says that this free Internet-based service is the first pet ID system specializing in custom medical alert tags and a national health registry to keep your pet safe.

PetHealthAlert offers all pet owners free pet medical alert tags (there is a $2.00 shipping fee) and a free online national pet health registry, and useful information about pet safety, pet medication and traveling with pets:

  • The medical alert tags provide critical and immediate health alerts for pets that become lost, stranded or displaced during natural disasters, when traveling, or for everyday pet emergencies.

Pet owners can choose from 10 styles of stainless steel tags, for example ‘seizures’, ‘blind’, ‘healthy pet’, or ‘I am a Survivor’ (to honor Hurricane survivors or rescue pets). Each tag is engraved with a unique ID number.

  • Pet owners can register their pets in PetHealthAlert’s National Pet Health Registry. Pet registry information includes:
    • The pet’s unique ID tag number
    • Pet owner’s contact information
    • The pet’s medical and veterinary contact information
    • An uploaded photo of the pet

If a lost or displaced pet is found, the rescuer can search for the pet’s unique tag ID number on PetProtect’s Web site and instantly retrieve the pet’s critical information.

Additional information from PetHealthAlert includes:

  • A checklist for pet travel
  • How to create a pet evacuation kit
  • How to create a pet first aid kit

Program to Keep Your Pet Safe Prompted by Katrina
PetHealthAlert was developed in response to first-hand experience of how natural disasters like hurricanes can be incredibly devastating for pets.

“Pet identification is so important, because more and more families are traveling with their pets, and disaster and emergency preparedness is something many pet owners don’t think about until it is too late,” says Amanda Jacobs of PetProtect.

By offering a free and effective pet identification service, PetHealthAlert hopes to make their pet medical alert tags available and easily accessible to every pet owner across America.

Keep Your Pet Safe from Anticipated Disasters
The PetHealthAlert staff offer the following statistics to underscore the need for a national service to keep their America's pets safe:

  • The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University predicts 17 named storms and 9 hurricanes for 2006.
  • The U.S. Fire Administration, in A Profile of Fire in the United States 1992-2001 confirms that “Fire departments respond to nearly 2 million fire calls that result in thousands of deaths.”
  • The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Saving the Whole Family, Disaster Preparedness Series suggests, “Preparing ahead of time and acting quickly is the best way to keep you and your family, including your animals, out of danger.”

“Natural disasters are not the only emergencies that can leave pets stranded, lost, or displaced,” Jacobs adds. “We can’t forget that pets are lost everyday, when traveling, and can even escape from their own home or backyard.”
