By Sharon O'Brien, About.com

If you are new to Medicare, or are looking for a doctor with a medical specialty who also takes Medicare payments, there's a handy tool from the U.S. government called the Medicare Participating Physician Directory. This tool will help you quickly locate an approved Medicare doctor in your area.

What You Will Find in the Medicare Participating Physicians Directory
This tool helps you search for an approved Medicare doctor in three ways:

  • Medical specialty
  • Geographical area, including state, county, city or zip code
  • Physician name

In addition to a list of Medicare doctors in your area who are medicare-approved, you will see profiles of the doctors, plus maps and driving directions to help you find the Medicare doctors' offices.

How to Find a Medicare Doctor Using the Participating Physician Directory
To check for approved medicare doctors in your area, go to the Medicare Participating Physician Directory. The directory is easy to use online by following very simple instructions.

If you have questions or would like help by phone, call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICAR (or 1-800-633-4227).
